Summer Workshop Classes, Cal Poly, July 2013

Each class will meet Monday – Friday, 9am-12pm

These classes all take the form of workshops with an instructor demonstration to start each session and student practice to follow. Instructor direction and personal help to each student follows throughout the morning and also further specific technique demonstrations, depending upon the class and the subjects.  Relevant printed handouts and source material for each class will be supplied, discussed and used where necessary in each class. Materials lists will be supplied for all classes.

Painting with Gouache (gwash) – the other watercolor – July 15th– 19th

During this week you will learn how to use gouache to paint still life studies and landscapes. The advantages of this opaque water color medium are many and varied. It can be used transparently like traditional watercolor, but also in the same painting, layered opaquely like acrylic or oil paint. Fine detail is possible or more impressionistic styles can be achieved easily. Blending and clean up are simple and the paint dries quickly. You will be painting on white and toned surfaces during this class. Local landscape and coastal scenes will be the subjects for this class.

Sumi  ink drawing and painting – July 22nd – 26th.

A bottle of ink, a bamboo pen, a brush and paper open up a world of possibilities.  In this workshop week you will learn how to make your drawings with pen and Sumi ink and then add ink washes, with a little watercolor too if you wish, to create a variety of beautiful ink wash drawings. The subjects that you will be drawing during this class include birds, animals, fish, flowers and landscapes. You will start all of your drawings with pencil until you are ready to draw directly with the ink.

Watercolor Explorations on Yupo paper  – July      29th – Aug 2nd

During this week you will be painting with your choice of either traditional watercolor or gouache on Yupo paper.  Yupo is a unique alternative to traditional watercolor papers. It’s an incredibly durable, stain-resistant non-absorbent synthetic paper. As a watercolor paper it has the advantage of being non-absorbent so colors lie on top of its surface producing brilliant vibrant effects. Best of all it allows you to wipe off unwanted sections of your painting and start again with a fresh surface.  You will learn many techniques to control and use the paint on this paper while you are painting flowers and landscapes this week.
