ART AFTER DARK

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4TH, 6 – 8PM

“Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue” ARTIST’S RECEPTION

Join us for a solo exhibit featuring encaustic artist Flo Bartell!
Show runs through October 28th.

“Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue is about a thirty year journey. For years I amused myself with color and line. In the early nineties through the beginning of this century, my work was mostly abstract water media painting that began with pouring. Swirls of red, yellow, and blue informed my next steps, kick-starting an evolution to blocks of color in my finished pieces. This exhibit will take you from that point to the present, showing my progression from hard edged water media paintings to flowing encaustics, through a period of adding texture and dimensional elements to wax, then sculpture and the addition of fiber, a few side journeys with graphite and ink, and finally, a new piece of digital art.

Through it all, I have sought escape, entertainment, and the satisfaction of creating finished projects. Eventually those were not enough. I wanted my work to mean more. While I became more mindful of content, I also looked back at older work and realized I unknowingly had been painting my story. Now I paint or sculpt with more insight into my content. Perhaps you will be able to see when telling my story became more deliberate.

In addition to my shift to new media, I can see color changes through the years. In the beginning of these three decades, color was varied, then red was predominant, then I used neutral with a bit of bling to convey a feeling of time passing and beauty in age.

I am eager to put this show together. I suspect I will gain new insight and learn more about myself when I see these selected pieces, some of my favorites, gathered in one place.”

-Flo Bartell

CLASS:  ACRYLIC

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH, 11AM – 2PM

FLUID ACRYLIC POURINGImage result for fluid acrylic pouring

WITH RACHEL ELKINS

FEE: $45

In this fun, interactive workshop, Rachel will demonstrate the “Dirty Pour,” “Flip Cup Pour,” and “Straw Technique” methods. She’ll discuss how to modify your paints with different pouring mediums, how to create cells, and provide recipes and instructions in a handout to take home for future experimentation.

All materials will be provided – except for a 12×12″ canvas to be purchased at Art Central upon arrival (with a 15% student discount). Please come dressed for mess.

In addition, because the canvas needs to fully set up and dry, students will need to make arrangements to pick up their painting.

This is a series of workshops designed to be experienced in an open-ended way. You may continue as long as you wish, or try just one or two sessions. Each month, there will be a new series of dates for the sessions. (If you are an experienced artist, you do not need to take Drawing Plus before taking these workshops.)

IMG_20190518_122017559.jpgDRAWING PLUS – 1st of 3 class sessions

WITH VIRGINIA MACK

FEE: $35/session

You are on your kayak, on a walk, or in your yard. What you see before you grabs your attention. At this moment, some would pull out their cameras, but not you. You reach for your drawing pencils, pens, ink, and watercolors. You want to create your response to what you are seeing. This 3-part workshop will build the skills you need to do so.

Learn how to use materials fluidly, moving in and out of media as you respond to subject matter. We will build drawing skills while experimenting with interactions between media: ink work and watercolor washes, open color and pencil work, pen and ink, ink washes, and watercolor. Learn how to build basic forms, textures, and set mood. This class is for both beginning and experienced students. Basic materials provided for the first session.

To enroll, contact Virginia by email: vbmack@charter.net or phone: 805-975-5374
