In Drawing Plus: Beyond the Basics, we will work our way through drawing exercises that will further awaken you to the dynamics of painting and drawing: composition, color interactions, the impact of choices of medium. Join us. Your masterpiece awaits!

This is a series of workshops designed to be experienced in an open-ended way. You may continue as long as you wish, or try just one or two sessions. Each month, there will be a new series of dates for the sessions. (If you are an experienced artist, you do not need to take Drawing Plus before taking these workshops.)

Basic materials will be supplied. To enroll, contact Virginia by email: vbmack@charter.net or phone: 805-975-5374

WORKSHOP: PASTEL

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14TH, 10:30am – 3:30pmsierras.jpg

PAINTING THE SIERRAS WITH PASTELS

WITH JIM TYLER

FEE: $85

In this Art Central workshop, we’ll cover all of the basics for applying pastels with the side, edge and ends of the stick; how to layer and blend pastels; the different kinds of pastel and paper; and we’ll talk about how to frame a pastel painting. Also, we’ll start with an underpainting technique to add an inner glow to the art.

What you should bring:
– Your pastels. If you don’t have your own pastels, Art Central sells some great sets. I recommend a set of Sennelier half sticks, as much as your budget allows. A less expensive option is to get a set of 48 hard pastel sticks, although in the long run you’ll probably want to get softer pastels. If you don’t have the budget to buy your own pastels, I have a limited number of sets available to borrow for a fee of $25.

– An 8″ x 10″or 11” x 14” piece of sanded paper, plus a little scrap paper. I recommend UArt, 500 or 600 grit. This is also available at Art Central.

– A backboard to mount your paper on. This can be matboard or foamcore or anything similar. Tape your paper to your board using artists tape or masking tape.

– A rag to keep your fingers clean.

What I’ll provide:
– A reference photo for each student.
– Miscellaneous pastel supplies
– Tables, chairs and table easels.

Please let me know if you have questions. I’ll send out a reminder right before the workshop starts. To reserve a spot, please inquire about availability and then send a check for $85 to the address below.
