It was a great weekend!

This past weekend was packed with creative fun… here are some highlights!

Art After Dark at Art Central

We had an awesome turnout at the opening reception of David Limrite’s students in “Figuratively Teaching” last Friday during Art After Dark! It was so much fun talking with the amazing artists in the show (some are pictured below).

Watercolor Workshop with Tracy Taylor

Tracy’s under-watercolor class filled our gallery on Saturday, everyone had a blast creating vibrant watercolor paintings of sea animals and plants. The finished pieces are breathtaking!

Abstract Acrylics with Drew Davis

Drew taught another amazing workshop on Sunday! Working mostly from imagination, we used various techniques in color and brushstroke to create movement. Everyone had a blast learning from Drew and creating energetic abstract paintings!

Welcome, Tamara Walter!

Art Central is happy to welcome Tamara Walter as our newest gallery member!

Born in 1957, Tami remains a child of the 60s. While obtaining a degree in science and devoting over 36 years in the black-and-white world of engineering, she maintained her internal creative balance by continuing to pursue her love of various art disciplines. Involved in the stained-glass world of the 1980s, she has been involved in design and creation of many multi-disciplined projects.

Practicing the arts of weaving, writing, various jewelry making techniques, mixed media, mosaic and welding, she returned to her first love when she discovered the wild and wonderful world of Kiln fused glass. After many classes with well-known artists, she has set up her own studio today to dabble with the various effects temperature, color and texture have on fused glass pieces. An avid antiques collector and animal lover,  many “found” items are currently being incorporated in a line Tami is creating called “Inclusions.”  Much like steampunk art, “Inclusions”  include items such as old keys, gears and nails captured in fused glass pieces. While creating this line, she continues to achieve an even balance of right and left brain activity by using the techniques learned while designing electrical and civil engineering projects and incorporating the textures and designs ingrained from her “flower child” past. She continues to use vibrant colors and specialty glass to achieve beautiful garden art, vessels, wind chimes and whimsical glass creatures while continuing to learn the newest and latest fusion techniques.

Come meet her, and see her amazing glass work, tonight at Art After Dark, along with the wonderful work of all of our guest artists participating in our new show “Little Treasures” …

and… here are some more treasures that you can see tonight…

WOOF! “Fur, Feathers and Fins” is the April exhibit in Art Central’s Gallery!

Art Central Gallery is so proud to present our first fundraising event …

“Fur, Feathers, and Fins”
*  *   *  Friday, April 6th , 6-8pm  *  *  *
This exhibit is the labor of love of a lot of people – the artists themselves, the folks at Second Chance at Love Humane Society, and some very special people who worked tirelessly to get the word out about the event.   We are very excited about the incredible artwork that will be part of this show,  and cordially invite you to join us this Friday, April 6th, from 6-8pm during Art After Dark for this event.
50% of all animal-theme art that is sold during the month of April at our gallery will be donated to Second Chance at Love Humane Society.  Please help us to support this amazing organization.
Exhibit will run from April 5th through May 1st, 2012.
Art Central hours are Monday thru Saturday, 10am-5pm.
1329 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo
Every Dog Deserves a Second Chance   In a world  where animal “shelters” are often just stopovers on the way to euthanasia— where  abandoned, neglected, abused, and troubled pets are condemned for the  carelessness of humans— there is a place where dogs get a second chance at life,  love, and happiness.
Second Chance at Love Humane Society  We are a  no-kill animal welfare organization, was founded in 1994 for our society’s dog  outcasts:  Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and other strong-willed breeds; “widowed”  senior citizen dogs; dogs without leaders or advocates; dogs trained to fear and  fight. Few humans have a heart for sick, old, troubled or intimidating dogs.  Few  dare to take on the challenge these animals present. Few realize that, if given  the chance, there is certain hope for these tragically misunderstood  animals.
Second Chance at Love Humane Society dares to  care  These mutt misfits and condemned canines are the voiceless,  helpless souls for which our hearts break.  But to truly save them takes more  than just compassion and shelter. With each rescue comes the challenge to turn  around a lost-cause dog and make it adoptable and balanced so that its next home  will be its forever home. The process takes patience, fierce determination, constant leadership, lots of exercise, and diligent discipline. Since many  Second Chance dogs never received this sort of stability and security, this is  often their first chance at being a dog.

Join us Friday for this soft and luminous show!

“SPIN”- An Exhibit by Silk Painters International

 March 1st- April 2nd

Artists’ Reception Friday March 2nd, 6-8pm (Art After Dark) Art Central Gallery, 1329 Monterrey St. San Luis Obispo

Join us for this soft and luminous show. This March Art Central welcomes Silk Painters International.

Silk paintings are sensuously light with colors ranging from the delicate and ethereal to brilliant jewel tones.

Silk Painters International (SPIN) aim to support and encourage the professional development of silk artists and to promote worldwide recognition of and appreciation for silk art. Artists use special tools, materials and unique skills to paint on silk.

Newest additions to our gallery… Artists EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Over the last 3 months we’ve brought in several new artists, and you GOTTA come by and see their work!  Wonderfully diverse selection of acrylics, pastel, oils and gourd art.

  • Denise Schryver, who has her own lovely gallery “The Olive Tree” in Atascadero,  has joined us, with several of her gorgeous pastels gracing our walls.  Her serene landscapes will evoke an emotional response deep in your soul.

  • George Karamitsos has hung his bold, dramatic acrylics up,  the colors leaping out to grab your heart!   He describes his work as loose and colorful California landscapes.

  • Lauren Birkhahn, my creative sidekick at the store, has some of her expressive oil paintings hanging. Her work depicts our region’s flora and fauna in poetic homage.

  • Margo Ryzi-Ryski, our sole long-distance artist, has a love affair with feline whimsy – her paintings are delightfully irreverent – you can’t help but chuckle when you see them!

  • Carrie Meadows is our newest addition, with exquisite gourd art adding to our variety.  She describes her work as making art from a natural canvas.

Please come and see these and all our other fabulous artists!

“Right Before My Eyes” – Jason Mayr’s Exhibit at ART CENTRAL!

We are delighted to present Jason Mayr as our Guest Artist this month!

Have you ever seen Jason’s work?  You owe it to yourself to see this exhibit – From June 1st through June 28th, his extraordinary luminous oils will grace the guest wall of Art Central’s gallery.  Artist reception is June 3rd, from 6-9pm!

My aim is to create images that are full …
sometimes full of light, sometimes mood,
sometimes dancing paint.  I strive to produce
paintings that will enrich the spaces they
occupy, not conquer them.
                                            –  Jason Mayr
