CLASS: WATERCOLOR PAINTING
THURSDAY, JANUARY 17th, 10:30AM – 1PM (ongoing, every other Thursday)
PAINTING SEASCAPES WITH STRONG VALUES
WITH HARWOOD “WOODY” BENTON
FEE: $45 per class101818_woodybenton.jpg

Watercolor painting is the process of staining heavy paper with water based pigment. With practice and patience, you can learn to capture the subtle shapes and light in the world around you. Watercolor, at its best, is about being in the moment and finding the essence of a subject rather than getting caught up in all of the minute details. In this class, we will start from a blank page and learn to bring to life a seascape scene from start to finish. Woody will demonstrate technique and show you how to create relationships with strong values, guiding each person as they try their hands at this wonderful medium.

This class is for adults. You do not have to have any prior experience. Woody has inspired adults for decades to add this form of moving meditation to their self-care regime. Paper supplied, students supply their own paint & brushes. To enroll, please contact by e-mail: cerulean777@icloud.com.

BEGINNER COPPERPLATE CALLIGRAPHY

Great introduction to copperplate script … suitable for beginners and a wonderful “brush-up” for other lettering artists. Mary Lou has an abundance of experience with all kinds of calligraphic lettering, but absolutely adores this style. It is suitable for wedding invitations and greeting cards, as well as informal everyday elegance. Students will be able to use the copperplate script with pencil and/or a pointed pen by the end of this workshop. This workshop includes a complete review of pen cleaning, set-up, and troubleshooting inks.

Bring your lunch and relax with Mary Lou and your fellow students, and enjoy perusing Mary Lou’s collection of samples and books!

To register, please contact Mary Lou at 805-441-3246 or e-mail her at mljohnson805@att.net.

Art Central will celebrate 8 years in business on Saturday, February 9th!

You’re Invited! Join us for our January Silk Exhibit!

“Wild Silks – Three Perspectives”

Featuring silk artists: Jeanne Miller, Dana Kimberly Hixson, and Martha Sparta.

First Show of the year!!
Join us during Art After Dark for the opening on Friday, January 4th from 6-8pm. Show runs thru January 29th.

Wild Silks – Three Perspectives showcases the work of three silk artists who paint together, sharing their talents and insights with one another.  Jeanne Miller has been an artist and art instructor working in silk, pastel and oil for more than 25 years. After sharing a work studio with accomplished oil painter Dana Kimberly Hixson, Jeanne convinced Dana to try silk painting. Mutual friend Martha Sparta brought a solid foundation in drawing, painting and sewing to the group, and quickly mastered silk painting as well. These three artists, while focused on their own favored subjects and approaches, enjoy collaborating on projects too. This show celebrates their art, friendship, and love of the natural world, and also offers a peek at the handmade clothing they create.

Jeanne Miller

My landscape paintings celebrate earth, water and sky. I love the American west, and paint as a way to honor and stay connected to my favorite places. I am also passionate about oil and pastel, and continue to work and exhibit in those media as well, but I find that silk so beautifully captures the amazing scenery, vistas and rock formations that I love! And as an instructor, it’s always fun for me to share the magic of dye on fabric, and to see how other artists express themselves on silk. (jeannemillerart.com)

Dana Kimberly Hixson

My oil painting technique involves many thin, detailed glazes of pigment on a prepared hardwood surface. The art and immediacy of dyeing silk provides a stark contrast to this approach, and is a wonderful challenge for me. The silk allows me to step outside my comfort zone to just ‘see what happens’ as this fluid medium is exciting and unpredictable. I’ve never worked with watercolor but can imagine it might be similar. I’ve always had a love of silk and consider it a privilege to work on it – it’s a true miracle of nature.(danakimberlyhixson.com)

Martha Sparta

I’m particularly drawn to complex, intricate patterns such as in cloisonne, paisley, tree bark,or snakeskin. I have enjoyed a lifetime of creative practices ranging from calligraphy, ceramics and pastels to textiles, pencil, and ink drawings – and now silk painting. When I started working in silk, it just grabbed me! I love the versatility of this medium, creating a beautiful wearable art piece or mounting on canvas or for wall hangings and pillows.

More great stuff added to our fundraising sale!

Have you ever looked in my office?  It is the equivalent of a junk closet.  Why? because when we get samples, or products that aren’t perfect, I hoard them.  Not for myself, but to give away – there is always someone who will appreciate a slightly dented tube of paint, a sample pad of paper, etc, etc.

Needless to say, it can get to be too much, so this morning I ruthlessly grabbed 80% of aforementioned bits and pieces, and carted them out to add to the sale.

Come in and take advantage!  There are still some great items, like print racks, easels, assorted odds and ends, and we probably still have about 50 frames left. There is also some lovely artwork that was donated.

The sale will go through 4pm today, and since we’ll be closed Monday and Tuesday, last chance will be Wednesday, until about 1pm.  After that we’ll box up what’s left and donate it.

Happy New Year!

Our Fundraiser SALE has begun!

So much great stuff!

Sketchpads and journals, canvases, various paints, fine papers (mostly printmaking and watercolor), print racks, books, light fixtures, palettes, and a TON of frames – all  styles and sizes – (I’m guessing we have between 200 and 300!)

There are so many frames, we realized we just can’t start to price them!

SO…  make us an offer!

Keep in mind we appreciate generosity because this is, after all, a fundraiser, but we also don’t want to pack up what is left over – so come, browse and help us help an art student get a scholarship!

Come in Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during our regular store hours and get while the selection is great!

Please – Cash or check ONLY – no credit or debit cards can be accepted for fundraiser items.

STORE HOURS – Thursday and Friday 10-5:30pm, Saturday 10-5pm, Sunday 12-4pm

and remember… we will be closed Monday and Tuesday – happy New Year!

A memorial to benefit others…

Fundraising sale for a deserving young artist after Christmas, at Art Central

I sometimes look around my studio and pity whoever will have to go through it when I’ve come to the end of my journey. There are some really great materials – watercolors, oils, beautiful brushes, assorted papers and pads, frames, tons of pencils, markers, etc. Of course there are also the drawers of “STUFF” that I can’t bear to part with – I just know that someday I’ll make a mosaic, or something out of all the clutter… (yeah, right…)
Sound like your studio?

One lovely lady, Anna Unkovich, came to the end of her journey several months ago, and her husband Don came to me to see if I could help him find a home for all of the items that were a part of her studio.

I love facilitating events like this. Once again, Art Central will host a fundraiser, and like last year, all proceeds will be given to Morro Bay Art Association to offer a scholarship to an art student. And a generous friend of mine, who is in the process of downsizing, heard about this upcoming event, and decided that she would like to offer some of her own excess materials to benefit the scholarship.

As we did last year, this sale will be held in our gallery, and there will be a wonderful array of art supplies to choose from. There will be a LOT of frames, mostly new, in a plethora of shapes and sizes. Please come, browse, and buy, and help us to help another young artist get the financial assistance to pursue his or her passion!

Our sale will run from December 27th thru January 2nd, but please note that we will be closed December 31st and New Years Day.

Help us create a wonderful memorial for Anna, and a fantastic opportunity for a young artist.

“Anna was a creator. In both words and art pieces, she loved to produce something that ignited a feeling. As a lifelong teacher, it was her wish that she be able to go on teaching even after she left this existence. Anna would be thrilled that this fundraiser will benefit future artists.”

Happy Holidays –
Etty and the awesome staff of Art Central

and more!
